New Robin Hood Movie
Posted by: SCharger @ 2:08 PM - Movie

So Robin Hood movies tend to lack that most elusive Hollywood characteristic that we'll go ahead and dub quality.  By which I mean that they would probably never be up for a Best Picture Oscar.  That having been said, this Ridley Scott vehicle might have something going for it.  Namely Russell Crowe and Cate Blanchett.  Mark Strong, Danny Huston, Max von Sydow, and Mark Addy are always pretty good as well.  The jury is out, but go watch the HD Trailer.

World's Worst Car Forum?
Posted by: SCharger @ 8:24 PM - Cars,Psychology

So we've all seen the forums that have to do with specific cars.  I myself am a member of a Corvette forum.  There are countless forums for all different types of cars.  Usually filled with aficionados, posers, people looking for mechanical tips, and trolls.  But I can't imagine that ANYONE in their right mind (barring masochists) would actively sign up to be a member of the Chrysler Sebring Convertible Club.

Video Games and Choice ... and Women ... Again
Posted by: Phylaras @ 9:45 AM - Gaming,Video,Writing

So here's another Daniel Floyd video.  I figured it was worth posting because, though this is not at all the point of the video, it appears to me that implicit in this video might be a reason why it is that videogames fail to appeal to women: because they might enjoy more choice-laden stories than problem-laden stories.  I've been wondering what it is about the standard narrative that makes it unappealing to women, and now I think I have an inkling in the right direction (though, it's still beyond me what women (and some men) find in Romance stories).

A Personal Thank You to "This One Is On Us"
Posted by: BlackKnight @ 6:41 PM - Music,Video

I just want to give my personal thank you to all of the people over at thisoneisonus.org, echoingthesound.org, and nin.com, and anyone else that helped to make Another Version of The Truth: The Gift possible.  I was really worried for a while that arguably the best NIN concert ever to be performed (certainly in terms of visuals, interactive visuals, and theatrical performance), and arguably the best sounding live concert of NIN's, was lost to the pages of time.  Not only am I glad that that is not the case and that I get to watch this amazing performance again at will, but I am also pleased to be able to share it with those that missed it.

I just finished viewing the first part of this fan-based release and it is everything I had hoped for and more, surpassing even the greatness that is the Fragility 2.0 concert and accompanying DVD.  Again, a heartfelt thank you for all of the volunteer time, effort, and money that made this possible.  Nine Inch Nails fans really do kick ass!

1080p Tech Support For Your NIN Videos
Posted by: BlackKnight @ 5:10 PM - Tech,Video

In the event you download the 1080p Another Version of The Truth: The Gift and try to play it on your computer, you may find that the video playback lags a bit.  After some research, it seems that Blu-ray quality, or anything above 720p, is very hardware intensive and you need special codecs in order to make things run smoothly (assuming you have the proper hardware to do it in the first place).

The one I purchased was the CoreAVC 2.0 Codec for Windows and now the 1080p .mkv files run in Windows Media Player and they run perfectly smoothly as they should (it's $12.95 if you can't acquire it by other means).  The only other one I read that is comparable for 1080p playback is the FFDShow Codec.  If any of you have further information to add in this regard, feel free.

Bioshock 2 Funnyness
Posted by: SCharger @ 6:04 AM - Gaming,Humor,Video

Everyone knows about the ever increasing silliness that goes along with special editions of games.  Bioshock 2 is no different, and the producer, 2K Games took the opportunity to make fun of this.  The funny starts at about three minutes in.

For some reason this video is rated as adult by Youtube (despite no objectionable content) and won't let me embed, so go here to watch.  Most entertaining.

Another Version of the Truth: The Gift
Posted by: BlackKnight @ 11:41 PM - Awesome!,Music,Video

As Josh might say, my music pants just flew out of the universe!!!!

Taken from nin.com:

Our 2008 Lights In The Sky tour was an ambitious multimedia production on a scale well beyond anything we'd ever attempted before. Everyone involved was extremely proud of how it came together, and we were devastated when, for a variety of reasons, we were unable to capture it professionally for a theatrical or commercial release. As a "plan B" of sorts, early last year we released a massive 405gb free download of raw HD footage captured at three different shows during the tour. The idea was to get the footage out in the wild and see what our notoriously enterprising fans could do with it. There were no rules. No strings attached. This was a gift, and an experiment, and for the past year we've watched it come to life in more ways than we could have ever imagined.

Fans have edited
thousands of videos from the footage, assembled their own DVDs and live albums, even held theatrical screenings of their creations. And now, the ambitious and well-organized group known as This One Is On Us have released their massive, highly-anticipated creation, Another Version of the Truth: The Gift.

For 12 months, a
core team of dozens of fans and a network of thousands spanning the entire globe pooled their efforts to create this professional-quality 1080p 5.1 concert film, and have released it in every format from Blu-ray and DVD to iPod and YouTube. It combines footage from all three shows and includes DVD menus, bonus footage, a PDF booklet, and more. That something of this scale was produced entirely by fans, on their own time, purely for the sake of giving something back to the community, is absolutely unprecedented. You can read all about the project and find all the download links here, or watch it immediately on YouTube here. Theatrical screenings are already being organized, you can find more info about those here.

This is yet another
example of a devoted fanbase and a policy of openness combining to fill in blanks left by old media barriers. The entire NIN camp is absolutely thrilled that treating our fans with respect and nurturing their creativity has led to such an overwhelming outpour of incredible content, and that we now have such a high quality souvenir from our most ambitious tour ever. Or, as Trent simply put it, "Nine Inch Nails fans kick ass."

Oscar Nominations Announced
Posted by: BlackKnight @ 3:10 PM - Movie,News

So, I know some of you loathe the Academy Awards and I often feel ambivalent towards them since politics seem to often run them more than critical taste, but this year I'm actually pretty happy with the nominations.  Avatar is there often, as one might expect, but there are a lot of others that I'm happy to see there on the lists.  (Note: an easier to view list is on MySpace).

Smiling Dog
Posted by: Phylaras @ 6:10 AM - Animals,Cute,Video

So we all know that dogs wag their tails and are expressive, and that they often show that they are happy around their masters.  Well, here's a dog that actually smiles whenever her master is near, but she'll just wag her tail if she's happy around other people.  The master doesn't signal anything, she just does it.  Note: it's wacky Japanese TV ... but otherwise it's easy to see what I mean.
